My Family Culture
If I had to leave my home and country because of a
disaster, and had to take up residence in a strange place that I knew nothing
about, the comforting thing is that my family is with me. Deciding to take
three small items would be a challenge but at least all was not totally lost. Each
family member gets the privilege to take
one change of clothes and three
small personal items.
The first item that I would take with me is my grandmother’s picture which
reminds me of her strength and that I have that very strength. My second item
would be my cell phone as all the contact information of relatives and friends
are stored in that little device which is so easy to carry, even if phone service
is not readily available at this place I may be able to write letters. This
leads me to my third item which would be my personal computer (mini iPad), this
will afford me contact via skype, social media or one of the many over the
internet connections, and at the same time I would be able to write and record
my experiences. Also on my PC, I have videos of family memories and special
occasions that would be at my fingertip, some even without internet service
such as my pictures.
As I described the items and reasons for choosing them, I can envision fond
memories of my family, relatives and friends and I just believe that the
meanings may just come flowing out to you.
If on arrival I learned that I could only keep one of the items, I would keep
the picture of my grandma because she represents strength and courage. I feel
that because my family will be with me in this on this journey, we would be
able to cope and help one another get through the starting over period. We
would have lost the old connections (for now) but building new memories would
begin a new chapter in our lives to take the place of the old ones. We know
that together we can do anything because the bond is strong.
In my family and among friends and even strangers, I am referred to as mother Teresa
because of my kind and caring disposition. I realize that I do put others first
and really do care a whole lot about the welfare of those who are not able to
look out for themselves. I realize that I am a survivor who can stand up to
much more than I know.
Hello, Sherron, I love the profile picture of you and the baby...so precious. I respect how you showcase that out of all the items to keep, you would choose to keep the picture of your grandmother. Grandmothers are a dear and rare "commodity" to be blessed to still have with us, unfortunately mine has passed away but all that she taught to me still lingers on in me. Things have changed so much because the grandmas of today just does not seem like the grandmas of yesteryear, in my opinion. This leaves the children of today missing out on so much necessary wisdom that only a grandmother can give to you. By keeping family near, it will help keep us sane in an unclear world. Enjoyed your blog!
ReplyDeleteSherron,
ReplyDeleteI know it was hard for you to choose which Item to take with you; it was hard for me to. The one thing that I always carry with me is my Bible; with my Bible I know I can tackle anything that comes my way. This assignment has helped put things in perspective and let us know how precious life really is. Just think if the scenario really happened to you for real. I like the way you said you would keep the picture of your grandma because she represents strength and courage; it reminded me of my grandma because she was the strength in our family. We would definitely need strength and courage to help us get through the difficult times. It is important to remember that nothing stays the same forever and things change as a way for us to grow. We all find our strength when we are put in challenging situations, and we are capable of much more than we give ourselves credit. God never gives us more than we can handle.
I also said my phone because of all the information that is stored in my phone!! I enjoyed reading your post I understand how you feel about your family.Pictures are priceless and they all tell a story.
ReplyDeleteSherron,
ReplyDeleteI so agree with you that a photograph can represent memories, but can also evoke emotions and inspiration. I also appreciate your description of starting a new chapter. The resiliency of families in crisis situations is amazing. I have never been in a situation where all is lost, but seeing people in the news all over the world reminds us to be grateful for our blessings and to remember that our family culture can be passed on even without material things.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your post. My phone would be important because of contact information, but my bible would be the most important thing to me. My family and I have a strong faith, so studying the bible would be our calm while going through the storm. The picture of your grandmother would be great motivation for the family.
You are truly an admirable person, it is great to know that you are such a caring individual. yes we do live in the technology age and I admire you for mentioning them, as I was hesitant. Having the phone and ipad is a great way to keep all the info, however, i chose not to bring those items. You are very bold.
